The latest round of assault on my locks saw me transition from dark brown through to platinum blonde in two very close sessions. By the time I was done with the high maintenance white blonde and ready to take things back to a more natural red, it became evident that my hair was fried. I had dry frizzy ends and had lost significant length.
With my wedding a mere 9 months away, and my delusions of crowning grandeur, it was time to baby my health back to health. Anyone who has ever gone a little too far with their own locks knows how daunting of a task it can be to bring your hair back to life, so I thought I'd share the products that really worked for me (I'm still 3 months out from the big day and very happy with the current state of my hair).
Shampoo & Conditioner: Kerastase Therapiste Range
I cycled through a few restorative shampoos & conditioner duos with little to no effect. Eventually I shelled out the cash for the Kerastase Therapiste shampoo and rinse out products. I'm glad I did. Within a week of using these two products twice a week on my hair, I started to notice a change in the way it felt. My ends were far less frizzy and the new hair at the top of my head felt like silk after each wash. 3 months down the track, the appearance of my split ends have improved dramatically and my hair is re-gaining its natural shine.
The rinse out product is used BEFORE the shampoo, to protect the hair from the moisture stripping effect shampoo can sometimes have. Be sure to read the directions for use.
Unless you avoid salons, you've probably already heard someone wax lyrical about the wonder that is Olaplex/Curaplex. Olaplex is an in salon treatment used in conjunction with whatever colour product your hairdresser uses. It assists in maintaining the integrity of the hair follicle against any damaging effects the products may have. It is particularly wonderful for those of us who lighten our hair and I would hail it as an absolute must for anyone who chemically processes their hair on a regular basis!
The in salon treatment is followed up by a take-home treatment. It is a white conditioner-like solution applied once a week to wet hair before the process of shampooing. You leave it on for 10 minutes before washing it off and continuing with your usual washing & styling process. The at home-treatment acts as a top up between salon visits to maintain the strength
Styling: Kerastase Therapiste Serum
If your hair is damaged, you need to try to avoid heat styling it as much as possible to speed up the recovery process. This means air drying, and no tongs! I tried to do this wherever possible. If you do need to heat style your hair on occasion, I recommend the Kerastase Therapiste Serum. Its a dual pump that delivers a slick serum that acts as both a heat protectant, and a styling product to reduce frizz and improve the appearance of split ends. it also nourishes the hair with each application, I used this on the ends of my hair every day, and ran it through the top and mid lengths after every wash.
Other Tips & Tricks: Coconut Oil & Biotin Supplements
One thing I've found amazing for re-growing the length of my hair has been biotin/silica supplements, which you can pick up from Priceline/Coles. Most 'Hair, Skin & Nails' formula will contain both biotin and silica. I started taking these on our return from France in July and my hair has grown much faster than it usually does. It also has a great knock on effect on the elasticity of my skin and the strength and growth of my nails.
Last but by no means least, invest in a bulk jar of organic coconut oil. I use it for everything hair related - from slicking down my breakages and fly-aways to treating a dry and tight scalp. Once a week, the night before I wash my hair, I apply a liberal amount of coconut oil all over my hair, massage my scalp to stimulate growth, comb it through and leave it over night. The result post wash is soft, hydrated hair that lasts a few days!
Note: No. This post wasn't sponsored by Kerastase! I just really love their products and get good results with them every time. Its so rare to find products that do exactly what they claim to do, so I'm simply sharing the very real love!
